First, I had to figure out which company it was with, as I had no idea. I knew the renewal was in September each year, and I always paid annually as it was about £300, but beyond this I could not remember. I trawled my emails, and nothing....... I checked my bank statements, and also found nothing. I had insurance as I knew that I no issues renewing the Car tax earlier this year. Credit Card Statement were located, and there it was "Saga Insurance"! I had been chucking post from Saga in the bin for years, as I had presumed it was junk mail. I had received lots of junk mail, but forgot I still had a policy with them. I guess some of it was to do with my car insurance.
So I rang them, they found my policy from my address. I explained I sold my car a week before. The person I spoke to said "I can't back date the cancellation, so it will be effective midnight tonight. Acccounts will send you the paperwork, and as per our terms & conditions, there will be a £50 cancellation charge." I said I thouht it would only be £25. Apparently I should have known it was £50. I estimated my refund would be about £30 so it seems by cancelling the policy they would charge me an additional £20!
I now understand why sometimes not dealing with something becomes the better option.
Moral of this story..... do not cancel your car insurance, just do not renew it, if it only has a few weeks to go. It would have been be cheaper, save me the time I wasted figuring out who it was with and contacting them, and of couse also less stressful.
