I find it sad that others think they can pass moral judgement over this. Especially when these companies pay 20% of their turnover to HMRC in the form of VAT. VAT is a tax, and that is how the Government know how much these companies are turning over. You never hear how much profit they make in the UK, just how much they turnover. Profit is turnover less all the running cost like staff salaries.
Morally no one has the right to accuse others of “not paying their fair of tax” just because they choose to give it to good causes, charities or use for sponsorship which provides employment and jobs. Spending money on all these things reduces the amount of tax they will have to pay.
The money we receive through salaries or from our businesses is not pocket money from the government but money which is ours to start with. If they want it, they should prove that they know what they want to do with it, not pass moral judgment that we should give it to them and we should not be conned into doing the same.
I have seen no evidence that any Government, is anything other than an incompetent waster. How can anyone think that any Government would spend the money better than anyone else?
When 1,000 individuals have cash in hand income of only £500 which they don't pay tax on, the HMRC are being defrauded of £100K in tax. The difference is large companies who are not paying Corporation tax because of how they declare their profit are paying 20% in VAT but individuals who are just not declaring this income (because is so little) are paying nothing.
I don’t know anyone who can honestly say they maximize the amount of tax they pay! Which is better, arrange your finances to minimize the tax you pay, or just don't declare it! One is legal, and the other is not. Everyone will find a way of paying as little tax as they can, so why should attack others for declaring all their income but arranging it to pay less tax rather than those who don't declare it, and justify this because it is a small amount ?
